Abstract:

This panel explores athletes as tutees. How do we provide equality in the midst of rigorous expectations? Can we provide such impartiality? Speakers will discuss how we balance roles as fans, peers, and tutors, how athletes view their identities as students, and the community’s perception of academic support for athletes.

This proposal was my first panel presentation. Of the three presenters, I was the only one to be a repeat attendee at a national conference. This position placed me in a unique role. I was both a leader and a coworker. I learned to balance offering my past experience with allowing the other members of my team to craft an interesting piece.

By beginning with a discussion of what elements of writing center scholarship were important to us, we found a common thread of athlete misconception. Each member focused on a unique aspect of this topic. After gathering each co-presenters' individual writing, I worked to compile all of our perspectives into a proposal to submit. In the time between submission and presenting we worked to polish our own work as well as ensure a cohesive nature for the presentation as a whole.

Collaborating with my coworkers allowed me to assume many different roles- helper, encourager, negotiator, worker, and communicator. In all of these facets, working as a mutually respectful and encouraging team resulted in a successful presentation. Below is a link to our proposal as well as the abstract for our presentation.
