The Miller Writing Center cultivated my skills in management, communication, and business writing. The professional atmosphere of the office taught me how to navigate business meetings, agendas, and delegation. The peer collaboration provided me with experience in teamwork and collaboration.

Writing Center Collaboration

Staff Training

 

I participated in planning and leading the staff training for new and returning employees. I contributed by leading the distance tutoring session for returning staff. We focused on sharing tips we found most succesful as well as pitfalls in our tutoring stategies. This conversational session allowed me to provide a collaborative opportunity for our staff to improve. 

Interdepartmental Writing

 

My first project as a lead consultant was to finalize our first Staff Handbook. I was responsible for combining the suggestions and expectations from the director, graduate assitant, and various coworkers. Though this was not a face-to-face collaborative effort, I was expected to finalize the product. This project taught me how to use GoogleDoc in an efficient manner as well as communicating effectively through email commentary. 

I was also responsible for compiling and copleting a Plagarism Module that is now used across the University. I inheritted the project in its final stages and the majority of my work included editting and revising after external suggestions were made. I gained experience with interdepartmental communication as I worked to reconcile the expectations of the library staff, our office, and other involved parties. This project encouraged me to make close revisions and resolve conflicting suggestions.

Hiring Committee

 

The Hiring Committee provided me with experience in decision making in a corporate environment. Our commitee meets to review, discuss, and interview potential employees. This commitee allowed me to gain a better understanding of how to make decisions with a group as well as vocalizing my opinion in a senesitive yet clear manner. The Hiring Commitee provided ample experience in obtaining an opinion and being able to manuever a meeting in which decisions must be made.
